More tourists, fewer jobs

How many people needed to eat, seek accommodation and transfer to 57.7 million of foreign tourists who arrived in 2012? According to current figures, less to serve the 52.2 million that arrived in 2009. The arrival of international tourists is one of the few positive indicators that can still boast the Spanish economy. And however, the tourist locomotive is not reflected in employment. Year, which ended with one 2.7% increase in foreign visitors, ended however with 4.582 less people working in services of accommodation than in 2011, 3,377 employees less on hospitality or travel agencies and 1,000 fewer on tour operators.

"We don't have massive layoffs. But we have the staff to a minimum. Like everyone else in the sector. Where before you had three waiters, you now have two. And where there were two receptionists, you manage you with one. Thus summarizes a Madrid hotel entrepreneur how facing the crisis in the chain that is a partner. "The arrival of tourists rises, but because we adjust prices and throw offers." So you have to continue to reduce costs ", says. Employment figures seem to give you the reason.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, according to a report published Friday, Frontur employment occupied in the Spanish tourism sector decreased 5.2%, to 1.9 million workers. In the tourism sector in this quarter, decreased year on year both employees (6.4% less) and the self-employed (0.6% less).

In the fourth quarter of 2012, busy in the Spanish tourism sector decreased 5.2 %

And the year will not begin better employment tourism, if the official forecasts from the Institute of tourism studies are met, under the Ministry of industry and tourism. "For the first quarter of 2013, conditioned by the effect of Easter it is forecast that the entry of tourists could grow up to 7.4% (9.9 million) over the same period of the previous year." The planned total expenditure will amount to something less than 9.5 million (6%). On the other hand, employment in the tourism sector, measured by the number of affiliated to Social Security in tourism reversed a 1.4% ", warned in its latest situation report.

"The problem is that although tourism goes well, there is no investment or are born new companies able to hire. In addition, tourism inside, Spaniards visiting other places in Spain, stands", Albert Grau, of the tourism consultants Magma TRI points. Add to that, strong reduction of travel subsidized for the elderly.

"Imserso gave life to many hotel areas of coast in winter. It allowed many hotels open out of season, and maintain employment", he recalls. In addition, shorter trips, are imposed and often improvised, what gets difficult things to the tour operators and hotels, who cannot make provisions and have stable templates, recalls Grau.

According to estimates of CC OO, for every euro invested public money in Imserso 1.50 euros, are generated so that the cut in this program has no logic. "This Government has left the empty Ministry of tourism policies. What little has done, is negative: the rise in VAT, airport fees, missing total of training policies... ", complains Antonio Ruda, spokesman for the Federation of Commerce, catering and tourism of the Union.

Employment in the tourism sector, measured by the number of members of the Social Security, reversed a 1.4 %

"In a hotel, forecasts for the long term may be three weeks. This generates much rotation of templates, very little stability. And that just noticing in the quality,"added Ricardo Santomá, TSI-tourism Sant Ignasi's director, school linked to the Universitat Ramon Llull. This expert recalls the fall of employment in tourism in all 2012 has been altogether, in percentage terms, from 0.7%. "Compared with other sectors, is a more positive behavior," he recalls. But he admits that, with the rise of tourist arrivals, as stagnant employment ends up impacting quality.

According to the data of the last quarter, employees in tourism with a part-time working day grew annual rate (3.8%), while reduced those working full time. The greater recoil of hired staff occurred in services of accommodation (with a drop of 16.8%), that have, over the last few months of 2011, 50,000 employees less.

"The smooth running of the sector not is translating into jobs. "And here has everything to do the labor reform: not only does not serve to generate employment, but that is destroying and impoverishing what exists", believes Emilio Ferrero, Secretary of hospitality in CHTJ-UGT. It ensures that it has grown the temporality, submerged and unstable employment and regulation records occur. "Despite the fact that workers are making efforts, the quality is declining. And training has been left completely aside. Employers fail to invest in their workforce and nobody takes care of those who work for a sector that is working as an economic engine in crisis", summarizes.

"In this sector is not working with machines. People do it. And of these people depends on a good or bad service. With fewer staff, the service suffers always", warns. And in the Internet era, in which the client seeks bargains and low prices, it is also very attentive to the impressions of other travelers. "A very tough criticism in a portal of tourism that is popular, like Tripadvisor, can sink the business", it warns. Travelers, create, not just looking for cheap services, looking for a good quality hotel. "And there are other bets that entrepreneurs can do: differentiation and innovation", is recommended. "Own entrepreneurs must be those who are created that they need professional templates. "If they are not aware, and do not value it, will be missing quality", says Santomá.
